Abirami emphasizes that successful data architectures are not about following trends or copying what others are doing. Instead, it's about deeply understanding your organization—its current needs and its future direction—and designing an architecture that aligns with that vision. 2. Make It Specific to Your Organization

Don’t just follow trends—adopt tools and strategies that align with your actual needs.

Everyone is talking about the cloud, AI, GenAI, and all the incredible features out there—which are great, no doubt. But the most effective architectures are those that align with your organization’s unique priorities, not just what's trending.

It’s about asking: Do we actually need real-time data processing? Is this tool the best fit for our use case, or are we trying to retrofit our needs to match the tool? There are a lot of tools and design patterns out there, but it’s critical to know what’s essential for you.

3. Think Long-Term, Not Just Present Needs  

It’s not just about current needs but thinking ahead, too. It’s about being future-ready.

Abirami encourages a forward-thinking mindset—consider where your business is heading in the next five years. Your data architecture should be sized and built not just for now, but to support future growth and changes in priorities.

I always encourage teams to look five years down the road. What would be my priorities in five years? How might your business evolve? What might your data needs look like? Building your architecture with that foresight makes all the difference.

4. Keep It Simple and Tool-Agnostic  

Don’t overcomplicate the architecture with unnecessary tools or layers.  

Complexity can be the enemy. Simple, performant architectures that aren’t overly reliant on specific tools are often the most effective. Being "tool-agnostic" gives organizations the flexibility to adapt, rather than being boxed in by vendor limitations.

Don’t get locked into a particular tool or tech stack. A lot of organizations are realizing the value of being truly agnostic. Being tool-agnostic gives you the flexibility to evolve and adopt new platforms without being constrained. Your tools should support your data strategy, not dictate it.

5. Avoid Over-Tooling  

Don’t bring in tools just because they’re available—every component should have a clear purpose. From data ingestion to consumption, every decision should be intentional and necessary.

"You don't need multiple tools to pull data unless there's a conscious reason behind it. The same goes for data consumption. In large, federated organizations, this can be tricky. Different teams—like sales and finance—have different needs, tools, and approaches to data. That’s where concepts like data mesh can really help. Supporting diverse toolsets while maintaining architectural integrity is key.”

It’s really about taking a holistic view. The holistic approach is what differentiates a great architecture from an average one.

According to Abirami, winning architecture doesn’t stop at technology. The processes around architecture are just as important. Governance, change management, clear ownership—all these process-driven elements contribute to long-term success.

Technical architecture can't just be about systems, tools, or platforms. It has to go hand in hand with processes. From governance to DevOps to testing—these need to be mapped while you’re designing your technical architecture, not as an afterthought.

7. Build Tracking and Observability into the Architecture

The best architectures are not only technically sound—they’re also measurable, flexible, and ready to evolve. Performance and cost tracking need to be embedded from the start.

Abirami explains that every compute cycle, every storage decision, every tool you use comes with cost and performance implications. If you’re not measuring those from day one, you’re flying blind.

Just building something isn’t enough—you need continuous monitoring to keep it optimized. Let’s say a process currently consumes 10 grams of compute. With visibility and the right tracking in place, you might realize it could run on just 5. But you’ll only see that if you’re actively looking for optimization opportunities.”

It’s critical to measure both performance and cost at a granular level—from the tools you use to the way data moves through your platform. That visibility is what enables improvement.

Build tracking and observability into the architecture. When you're selecting tools or designing integration patterns, always ask: How will I monitor this? What will it cost? How does it perform? That visibility encourages a culture of optimization. You can’t improve what you can’t see.”

“The real success came from treating governance, DevOps, and testing as first-class citizens in the architecture. These areas were considered in parallel with the core architecture. That end-to-end view made the implementation stronger and more adaptable.”
